Rye Junior High School Language Program

At the end of 4th grade, students choose either French or Spanish to study in 5th through 8th grade. The 5/6 curriculum is a continuation of the elementary program with more reading and writing. They take part in a storytelling and drama course that changes each quarter. Students will develop presentation skills, speaking skills, cooperative and conversational skills as they acquire a new language. Readers, handouts, journals and software compliment the communicative program. 7th and 8th graders can choose from electives in either French and Spanish cuisine or French and Spanish Art History. 8th graders can take a year long course in either French and Spanish, which prepares them for level 2 or 3 at the high school. All language classes utilize storytelling, drama, games, music, art and movement for a multi-sensory approach. The World Language program prioritizes cross-cultural understanding, learning about the people, traditions and celebrations of other countries.
